With the Ceasefires of 1994 we in Northern Ireland began to experience a glimmer of hope of a peace settlement. Like so many others I was a daily participant in the agonies of the troubled North. I was reminded of the poem "Mise Eire" which speaks of the sadness of Ireland and my musings lead me to think of ulster in the same manner, "Mise Uile", "I am Ulster". Like many artists before me I saw the embodiment of Ulster as a grieving woman waiting for the changes that would bring peace. As a result I portrayed her with five politicians 'in her hair' Those who were influential at the time were John Hume, Ian Paisley, Albert Reynolds John Major, James Molyneaux and Gerry Adams . I wrote a few lines to accompany the piece:

I am Ulster

Men are bound in me

Loose strands braid in my hair

It is time

Mise Ulalh

I am Ulster,
Gerry Adams, James Molyneaux, John Major, John Hume, Albert Reynolds, Ian Paisily
I sleep serene when I know you are there.
I a Ulster

I sleep serene when I know you are there.

I need not fear the dark of life,

Nor yet dream the future I must Mould,

For my time has not yet come.

Cushion my growing,

Lead me forward with loving hands,

Waken me gently, soft breath on my cheek.

For Though you will teach me to walk as you

I will take your visions along different paths.
